Diving in Riviera Beach

Riviera Beach is home to one of the most famous shore dives in the world: Blue Heron Bridge at Phil Foster Park, a site that tops critter-hunters' lists globally despite maxing out around 20 ft. It's also the main charter port for Palm Beach County's drift diving, with boats running out of the Lake Worth Inlet to reef ledges and wrecks swept by the Gulf Stream. Few zip codes anywhere offer this combination of world-class muck diving and big-animal boat diving.

Blue Heron Bridge

The bridge dive works on a tide clock, not a dive-boat clock: you enter from the beach at Phil Foster Park and dive the slack window around high tide, when the incoming ocean water lifts visibility from a few feet to 30-plus. The reward is a parade of Atlantic oddities — seahorses, frogfish, batfish, flying gurnards, stargazers, octopus, and nudibranchs — over an unassuming bottom of sand, rubble, and a small snorkel trail. It's shallow, cheap (tank rental and a timed walk-in), and endlessly rediveable. Night dives during slack tides are superb.

The boat diving

Offshore, the county's signature drift diving takes over: ledges in 45–90 ft flown at the pace of the Gulf Stream, constant turtles, reef sharks on the deeper corridors, and late-summer goliath grouper aggregations on the wrecks north of the inlet. Operators run live-boat pickups on surface markers, so drift and SMB comfort matters more here than raw certification level.

Conditions and season

Ocean water ranges from the low-to-mid 70s °F in winter to the mid-80s in summer; the bridge shallows swing wider with the seasons. Boat visibility is commonly 50–80 ft when the Stream is close. The bridge dives on any calm day with a workable tide — check a tide table before planning, and give yourself the full slack window.
