Diving in Pompano Beach

Pompano Beach markets itself as the shipwreck capital of Florida, and the label is earned: the city's Shipwreck Park has been adding purpose-sunk vessels to an already crowded stretch of Broward County sand, headlined by the Lady Luck, a 324 ft tanker sunk in 2016 that sits in about 130 ft with her decks in Advanced Open Water range. The same three-tier reef system that runs the length of the county passes right offshore, so reef-and-wreck two-tank drifts are the standard day out.

The wrecks

Beyond the Lady Luck, the sand between the reef lines holds tugs, barges, and mid-size freighters at friendly depths, most grown over with sponge and soft coral and patrolled by goliath grouper. History buffs get a rarity here too: the SS Copenhagen, a steamship that ran onto the reef in 1900, lies scattered in 15–30 ft as a State Underwater Archaeological Preserve — an easy dive or even a snorkel when the sea is flat.

Reefs and conditions

The outer reef ledge in 60–90 ft is the fish magnet: undercuts full of snapper and grunts, morays in the crevices, nurse sharks under the overhangs, and reliable turtle traffic. Conditions mirror the rest of Greater Fort Lauderdale — mid-80s °F water in summer, low 70s after winter fronts, visibility routinely 40–70 ft, and gentle Gulf Stream drifts on nearly every dive. A 3 mm suit does the job most of the year.

Good to know

Boats run from the Hillsboro Inlet area with short rides to the sites. The deeper wrecks reward Advanced certification and a bit of experience with current; the Copenhagen and inner reef suit brand-new divers. If the Lady Luck is your target, book early in the trip and confirm the schedule — she's popular and weather-dependent.
