Scuba diving in Monterey

Monterey is the spiritual home of California shore diving. The rim of Monterey Bay drops divers straight into giant kelp forest from the beach, the marine life is protected by a patchwork of reserves that keep it absurdly abundant, and the local dive culture — shops, classes, weekend car-park camaraderie — is as established as anywhere in the country. Sea otters crack shells on the surface while you gear up; harbor seals photobomb safety stops.

The classic sites

San Carlos Beach at the Breakwater is the beginner's cathedral: an easy walk-in entry, a sloping sand bottom to kelp and rocky reef in 20–50 ft, and a sea lion colony on the jetty that treats divers as entertainment. The Metridium Field's boulders covered in white plumose anemones are the signature photo dive. South around the peninsula, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve offers reservation-only diving in pristine kelp, and Carmel's steep granite drop-offs — Monastery Beach among them — reward experienced divers who respect the famous shore break.

Conditions and season

The water is honest Northern California: roughly 48–55 °F year-round, which means a 7 mm two-piece at minimum and drysuits for most regulars. Visibility swings from 10 ft after storms to 40-plus on the magic days, with fall generally the calmest, clearest season. Surge, entries, and kelp navigation are the real skill checks here — depth rarely is. Upwelling in spring chills the water and feeds the whole system.

Good to know

Shore diving is free and most sites have nearby parking and rinse-friendly logistics, but boat charters open up the deeper pinnacles of Carmel Bay and outer Monterey. Book Point Lobos well in advance — daily diver numbers are capped. If it's your first cold-water trip, schedule a guided orientation dive; buoyancy in 20 lb of lead and a crushed suit is its own certification.
