Scuba diving in Houston

Houston isn't a walk-in beach-diving town — it's a launchpad. The city's dive operators train in clear inland lakes and quarries, then point their trips at the crown jewel of the Gulf of Mexico: Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, roughly 100 miles offshore, where salt-dome reefs rise from deep water to within 55–70 ft of the surface and support some of the healthiest coral cover in the Western Hemisphere.

Flower Garden Banks

The banks are a genuine bucket-list trip, usually run as a liveaboard weekend out of Freeport or Galveston. Expect oceanic blue water, 80–100 ft visibility on good days, manta rays that circle the buoy lines, loggerhead turtles, and — in late summer around the August full moon — one of diving's rarest spectacles, a mass coral spawn. Whale sharks pass through in the warm months. Depths and open-ocean conditions make this an Advanced Open Water trip; many boats also ask for recent dive experience.

Local training and lake diving

Closer to home, Houston divers keep their skills current in the region's freshwater sites — spring-fed quarries and lakes within a couple hours' drive that host most of the area's certification and specialty courses. Visibility runs from a few feet to surprisingly clear depending on the site and season, and water temperatures swing widely, so most locals dive 5–7 mm suits outside of summer.

Good to know

If the Flower Gardens are the goal, book well ahead — boats are few, berths are limited, and summer weekends sell out. The Gulf crossing is long and can be lumpy; seasickness planning is part of the trip. For newer divers, a local shop's lake schedule is the practical way to log dives and finish certifications between blue-water weekends.
