Scuba diving in Belize

Belize scuba diving is built around the Belize Barrier Reef, part of the second-largest barrier reef system in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, plus three offshore atolls — including Lighthouse Reef and the Great Blue Hole. Between shallow reserves off Ambergris Caye, walls at Turneffe, and seasonal whale sharks in the south, Belize offers more variety than almost anywhere in the Caribbean, all within an English-speaking country.

The signature dives

The Great Blue Hole, a huge circular sinkhole at Lighthouse Reef, is the bucket-list dive: a descent to around 130 ft to see ancient stalactites under the overhang, usually followed by Half Moon Caye Wall and the Aquarium on the same day. It's more about the geology than the marine life, though reef sharks often patrol the edges. Turneffe Atoll, the largest of the three atolls, is closer and more varied — its Elbow at the southern tip is famous for strong currents, schooling fish, and pelagics. Near San Pedro, Hol Chan Marine Reserve is a shallow channel packed with fish, and neighboring Shark Ray Alley is known for nurse sharks and southern stingrays. In the south, Gladden Spit near Placencia sees whale sharks around the full moons of spring, typically March through June.

Conditions and season

Water runs roughly 79–84 °F, and a 3 mm suit is standard year-round. Visibility inside the barrier reef is typically 50–80 ft, and often 100 ft or more at the atolls. The dry season, roughly February to May, has the calmest seas and is the most reliable for the long Blue Hole crossing. The rainy season runs about June to November, with hurricane risk peaking August through October; winter cold fronts can also cancel offshore trips.

Good to know

• Ambergris Caye (San Pedro) and Caye Caulker are the main dive bases; Placencia and Hopkins serve the southern reef and Gladden Spit.
• The Blue Hole is a long day — often two hours or more each way by boat from Ambergris or Caye Caulker — and most operators require Advanced certification and recent deep-diving experience.
• Marine reserve and park fees apply at Hol Chan, the Blue Hole, and other protected areas; they are usually collected by the operator.
• Liveaboards and atoll-based resorts are the easiest way to dive Lighthouse Reef, Turneffe, and Glover's Reef in depth.
