Diving in West Palm Beach

Palm Beach County is Florida's drift-diving heartland. The Gulf Stream runs closer to shore here than anywhere else on the U.S. east coast, sweeping clear, blue water over corridors of reef ledge in 45–90 ft — so West Palm Beach dives are live-boat drifts where you fly along the reef and the captain meets you down-current. The payoff for the moving water is big-animal traffic that few places in the state can match.

What you'll see

Sea turtles are the county signature — loggerheads, greens, and (in season) leatherbacks nest on these beaches, and you meet them constantly on the reef. Reef sharks and the occasional hammerhead cruise the ledges, and from roughly August through October the area's wrecks host one of the great spectacles in Florida diving: aggregations of spawning goliath grouper, dozens of 300-plus-pound fish stacked on a single hull.

Conditions and season

Water runs from around 73–75 °F in winter to the mid-80s °F in summer, with visibility frequently 50–80 ft when the Stream is pushed in tight. The current itself ranges from a lazy half-knot to a genuinely brisk ride; operators here are practiced at it, but every diver needs to be comfortable with surface-marker drills and blue-water descents. Most boats ask for Advanced certification or recent drift experience on the deeper ledges.

Good to know

Charters leave from the Lake Worth (Palm Beach) Inlet area with quick runs to the sites. Two-tank morning trips are the standard, with afternoon and night options in season. If the goliath aggregation is on your list, book well ahead — late-summer wreck trips fill fast — and bring a reef-legal flag setup if you plan to hunt lobster on the shallower ledges during season.
