Diving in San Francisco

San Francisco is a dive city whose dive sites are mostly a drive away — and what a drive. Bay Area shops train in local pools and protected coves, then run their real diving down the coast to Monterey and Carmel's kelp forests, up to the rugged Sonoma coast, and — for the boldest itineraries — out to the Greater Farallones, white shark waters that operators visit as topside eco tours rather than open diving. If you are certifying or shaking off rust in the city, this is the hub.

The signature dives

Monterey Bay is the default weekend: kelp cathedrals, harbor seals that tug fins, and the protected Breakwater entry that has taught generations of Northern California divers. Carmel's granite pinnacles add color — hydrocoral, walls of strawberry anemones — for divers comfortable with a bit more depth and surge. The Sonoma coast is the wilder option, dived on calm windows for abalone-country reef and dense fish life. The Farallon Islands, 27 miles offshore, are the region's apex-predator story: fall white shark season, visited by charter with shark-safe protocols and surface viewing.

Conditions and season

This is classic Northern California water: 48–55 °F, 7 mm hooded suits at minimum and drysuits everywhere. Visibility swings with swell and plankton — 10–15 ft is honest, 30+ ft happens on the good fall days. September through November is the prize window, when the wind lies down and the water clears. Winter swell shuts the open coast; Monterey's protected corners stay diveable most of the year.

Good to know

Certification courses in the city typically finish with checkout dives in Monterey, so plan a weekend south for the open-water portion. Cold-water skills are the real prerequisite here — book a guide or refresher if you trained in the tropics. And book coastal trips with flexible dates: the ocean, not the calendar, decides the good days.
