Diving in Bayahibe is the best diving in the Dominican Republic: a small fishing village on the southeast coast with calm, clear Caribbean water, short boat rides into Parque Nacional del Este, and trips out to Catalina and Saona islands. Many divers staying in Punta Cana make the drive here for the day, but staying in Bayahibe or neighboring Dominicus puts you minutes from the boats and lets you add wrecks, underwater museums, and night dives.
Catalina Island, off La Romana, has two famous sites: the Wall, a vertical drop-off covered in sponges and gorgonians, and the Aquarium, a shallow, fish-packed reef ideal as a second dive or for snorkelers. The St. George, a large cargo ship sunk as an artificial reef in 1999, sits upright with its bottom around 130 ft and its upper structure reachable in the 50–80 ft range — a deep dive best suited to Advanced divers. The Atlantic Princess, a shallow wreck close to the village, is an easy option for any level. Near Bayahibe and Catalina, two living museums display artifacts from colonial-era shipwrecks — including cannons and anchors — in shallow water, among them the Guadalupe underwater museum. Longer trips head east to Saona Island and along the national park coast for reef and wall dives.
The south coast is protected from the Atlantic trade-wind swell, so conditions are often much calmer here than on the Punta Cana side. Water temperatures range roughly from the upper 70s °F in winter to the mid-80s in late summer; a 3 mm suit is typical. Visibility is usually 60–100 ft. Hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest risk from August to October, when afternoon storms and occasional disruptions are more likely.
Who it suits: divers of all levels. Beginners get calm, shallow reefs; Advanced divers get the St. George and Catalina's wall; and anyone staying in Punta Cana gets a much better dive day by making the trip south.
