SELA SCUBA

From indoor heated pools in New Orleans and Baton Rouge to world-class dive destinations like the Philippines and Cozumel, SELA SCUBA guides students and certified divers every step of the way — from first breath underwater to bucket-list adventures abroad.

SELA SCUBA is a division of SELA Aquatics, with training locations at the UNO Aquatic Center in New Orleans (an Olympic-sized indoor heated pool at 6801 Franklin Ave.) and Mirabeau Park Aquatic Club in Baton Rouge (a state-of-the-art heated outdoor pool with a retractable roof at 1272 Wylie Drive). Operating since 2014 for scuba and expanded to the public in 2020, the center is led by NAUI instructors Rob Dowie, Robyn Barthel, and Alex Effinger — all diving since 2013 with experience in destinations ranging from Cozumel to the Galapagos and Palau. The school specializes in small group classes of typically 4–6 students, offering NAUI courses from Open Water Diver through Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, and Divemaster, along with Nitrox certification and refresher sessions for already-certified divers. Private classes are available and can be scheduled at times convenient to the student. All open water classes include complimentary DAN student dive insurance, a dive log, e-learning access, and use of scuba gear in the pool. Beyond certification, SELA SCUBA organizes group dive travel to destinations worldwide — both land-based resorts and liveaboards. Upcoming trips include Cozumel (October 2026), the Philippines at Atlantis Dumaguete (April 2027), and Panama City, FL checkout dives. The Dumaguete trip features up to five dives per day with small groups of no more than six divers and access to renowned muck diving species including blue ring octopus, frogfish, nudibranches, and flamboyant cuttlefish.
