Explore one of America's most celebrated reef systems with a guide who knows every coral head—then descend the hull of the Adolphus Busch Sr. and find goliath groupers waiting in the shadows.

Based out of Big Pine Key, Captain Hook's Looe Key Reef Adventures is one of the few operators that regularly runs guided dives at Looe Key—a vast, biodiverse reef in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary celebrated for its coral formations and marine life. The team keeps things personal by pairing every dive with a complimentary divemaster in the water to help guests navigate the expansive terrain, pick out the reef's highlights, and spot the species that make Looe Key stand out. Equipment setup and gear changeovers between dive sites are handled as standard, making the operation especially welcoming for divers who haven't been in the water recently. The signature deep excursion descends to the Adolphus Busch Sr., a 210-foot Scottish-built freighter purpose-sunk off Big Pine Key in December 1998 and widely regarded as one of the premier wrecks in the Florida Keys. The ship settles at 50 to 105 feet and is safe for light penetration, allowing divers to explore cargo holds and peer through portholes at resident goliath groupers and green moray eels. Wreck dives are typically structured as a two-dive trip combining the wreck with a shallower reef stop, though the "double dip" format—both tanks on the Busch Sr.—is also available. Advanced Open Water certification or equivalent deep dive experience is required. The operation functions as a full-service dive shop stocking professional equipment brands and providing air fills, tank visual inspections (VIPs), and hydrostatic pressure testing. Certification courses are taught on a private or semi-private basis by a team of local instructors, covering everything from introductory Discover Scuba experiences through open-water all the way to divemaster.
