Hypoxic Hunters is a freediving and spearfishing instruction company founded by Zachary Small and based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The business runs guided ocean trips as well as a full course curriculum built around the Freediving Instructors International (FII) methodology — a safety-first framework created by 13-time world record holder Martin Stepanek. Zach trained directly under Stepanek and spearfishing authority John Dornellas, and now brings that instruction to students ranging from complete beginners to seasoned underwater hunters. The course lineup runs from a Basic Freediving Safety class (open to participants as young as 12) through the two-day Level 1 Freediver program — targeting 66-foot depths and 3-minute breath-holds — up to a three-day Level 2 course that pushes into the 66–132-foot range. A dedicated spearfishing course layers on location scouting, hunting tactics, and fish-handling technique designed to accelerate progression far beyond self-teaching. Kelly Franklin, an underwater photographer and FII instructor, rounds out the teaching team with a specialty in problem-solving for divers at every comfort level. Beyond scheduled courses, the operation offers private coaching and guided boat trips, with Zach also available to travel for instruction. He currently manages a freediving and spearfishing shop in Fort Lauderdale while teaching across the East Coast and internationally, making Hypoxic Hunters one of the more travel-flexible freediving outfits on the Atlantic seaboard.
