From Goliath grouper that bark at curious divers to a mysterious sinkhole 23 nautical miles offshore, the Gulf of Mexico off Marco Island offers diving that consistently surprises.

Scuba Marco has called Marco Island home since 1998, running small-group Gulf of Mexico dive trips aboard the Psychquatic—a vessel capped at six divers that departs from the Snook Inn's dock just around the corner from the shop. Three tiers of local trip fan out across the shallow Gulf shelf: near shore dives in 25–40 feet of water (approximately 4.5 hours), middle ground trips to a mix of artificial reefs and wrecks at 40–55+ feet (5 hours), and offshore expeditions that push beyond 55 feet and include the Blue Hole—a dramatic 80-foot-wide sinkhole 23 nautical miles southwest, where a vertical shaft plunges to 90 feet and opens into caverns where fish swim disoriented to the roof. Every trip includes two tanks, weights, snacks, and non-alcoholic refreshments, and departure times flex with the tides. The Gulf waters here are deceptively lively. Massive Goliath grouper—reaching up to 7 feet and 700 lbs—stack up by the dozen on compact artificial reef structures barely half a football field in area. Loggerhead sea turtles cruise regularly in spring and summer; nurse sharks, southern stingrays, and barracudas are regulars in warmer months; and huge bait balls, queen and French angelfish, snapper, snook, porkfish, nudibranchs, mantis shrimp, and invasive lionfish round out a remarkably full food chain. Visibility typically runs 15–50 feet, and the shop is transparent about conditions—most trips are confirmed only one to three days in advance based on forecasts. Beyond local charters, Scuba Marco organizes monthly Drive N Dive day trips to Fort Lauderdale, where the group boards large charter vessels for 2-tank dives on deep wrecks and drift reefs. Annual international group travel—such as a week-long dive trip to Curacao's Sunscape Resort—extends the adventure further afield. The shop doubles as a full retail operation and ScubaPro Platinum Dealer, stocking and renting BCDs, regulators, computers, masks, fins, and snorkels, while offering the complete PADI certification ladder from Open Water through Divemaster.
