RBM Quarry (Lake Norman)

Mooresville, USListed on Direct
Operated by Piedmont Diving and Rescue Association

A freshwater quarry near Lake Norman open every day of the year — no tides, no thermoclines, and over 1,000 fellow members across the Carolinas and Virginia to share it with.

The RBM Quarry sits at 350 Greenbay Road in Mooresville, North Carolina, just off Lake Norman, and is one of three quarries owned outright by the Piedmont Diving and Rescue Association (PDRA) — a non-profit membership organization incorporated in 1963. Members from across North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia enjoy unrestricted 24/7, 365-day-a-year access to the facility for freshwater quarry diving, making it a rare year-round inland dive destination in the Southeast. The quarry is equipped with gear-up areas, changing facilities, sanitation facilities, student areas for training dives, camping areas, and ample parking. Aerators keep the water column mixed so that thermoclines do not form, maintaining consistent conditions regardless of season. The PDRA also organizes special events at the site, including a Treasure Hunt, an Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest, and a Swap Meet. With more than 1,000 members and a volunteer board of directors, the PDRA has continually invested in its quarries since purchasing them between 1983 and 1988. RBM Quarry is managed by on-site Co-Managers Buddy Mckinney and Travis Kilby, and its student areas make it a popular venue for local dive instructors conducting certification training in a controlled freshwater environment.
