Gray Quarry
Clear water with no thermocline and a sunken Cessna airplane, firetruck, and school bus waiting on the bottom — Gray Quarry delivers a one-of-a-kind freshwater dive experience in northeast Tennessee.
Gray Quarry occupies nearly 3 acres of clear water reaching 70+ feet deep in northeast Tennessee, purpose-built exclusively for recreational scuba diving and instruction. Operating as a 501(c)(3) non-profit, the facility directs all dive entry fees back into quarry maintenance and ongoing site improvements, ensuring a continually evolving underwater environment for the diving community. The quarry's most distinctive feature is its constant water temperature from top to bottom, achieved through continuous aeration that eliminates the thermocline typically encountered at natural dive sites. Submerged attractions include a Cessna airplane, firetruck, school bus, houseboat, and various statues — providing a uniquely engaging setting for recreational divers and a rich platform for training scenarios. Gray Quarry also accommodates fire, rescue, and law enforcement personnel for specialized diving activities, and hosts community events such as poker runs and gear swaps that reflect its mission to promote safe, family-friendly participation in the sport of scuba diving.
